Introduction to an Entrepreneur

My name is David Rivera and I am senior majoring in entrepreneurship with a minor in marketing. I believe the best part of my major is the endless amount of possibilities I can do with it after I graduate. My favorite class from last semester, and favorite class at OU, was The Entrepreneurial Process with Professor Bolen. It provided me with useful information that I can use in real life with the future startups I plan on creating.

My hobbies include playing sports, watching sports, and playing video games. My favorite sport to play is basketball because it's easy to get a pickup game at the Huff. I also like playing football since I used to play in high school, but there's not many opportunities to get an actual game set up. My favorite sport to watch is football, but primarily only college football. I am not a huge fan of the NFL because of how less important each game is compared to college football. My current favorite video game is Rocket League because of how competitive it can be. It is also the easiest game to play if you're short on time since every game is only five minutes long.

My favorite show is Breaking Bad and I do not see any other show really beating it out for that number one spot. It is one of the most iconic shows to date and will always be something I can go back and watch. In terms of movies, my favorite is Interstellar. I saw it in theaters twice and I never get tired of the ending even though I know everything that is going to happen. My favorite book is Shoe Dog which I recently read over the summer. It is written by Phil Knight, the founder of Nike, and it’s about his journey in creating one of the most legendary brands in the world. Since I want to be an entrepreneur and start my own business, this book was a good depiction of the many struggles that everyone pursuing that path will go through, but also shows the rewards that can come with it.

I would say my goals are tied to entrepreneurship and starting my own business. I am currently working on a startup that I hope to have a functional prototype for by the end of this year. One of my long term goals is to get that startup to a place where I can go public with it and create wealth that way. I think it would be exciting to have a successful startup at a young age like many other iconic entrepreneurs have done before. My big dream goal is to be a well-known, respected name in the corporate world. One of my biggest role models is Bill Gates because of how he created his wealth and how he has used that wealth to help other people. The chances of ever getting close to what he has accomplished are small at best, but I still aspire to be like him in terms of his charitable nature and selflessness.

  1. Storytelling is a BIG part of marketing, so I hope this class will be able to help with your long-term professional goals, David! And Interstellar is one of my all-time favorites also. Did you go see Dunkirk? It is the same director and also the same composer who did the film score, Hans Zimmer... and even though it is a historical movie, kind of the opposite of science fiction, there were so many ways the music and camera worked like it did in Interstellar; I really liked it! And speaking of Breaking Bad: just this week I watched a great movie with Bryan Cranston based on a true-story about the Colombian cartels back in the 1980s: Infiltrator. Now I want to read the book that it was based on; it was some serious crime drama — a story from real life!

  2. Hey David! Entrepreneurship sounds like a really cool major! You seem like the type of guy to tackle any problems with a sense of positivity. You and I share a love for Breaking Bad, being one of the few shows that I would put high on my list of favorites. I am actually considering re-binging it whenever classes start to slow down. As for favorite sports, I really like football as well. Although I have to urge you to give the NFL a chance. If anything, try to get into the NFL at least around playoff time.
Good luck with your dreams of a startup and good luck with the rest of the semester!

  3. Hi David! I could not agree more with your perception of the NFL compared to that of college football. I still tend to watch it (49er’s fan so not too interested now) any chance I get on a Sunday night but usually just wait for playoffs to come around. However, college football is always intriguing to watch on a weekly basis. Bill Gates is an exemplary man to look up to and I hope everything works out for you and your future business!

  4. Hey David! Man, I love Breaking Bad so much. That was truly a masterwork and I agree with you that nothing can come close. I like what you said about football, I am Seahawks fan, so I will watch their games sometimes, but otherwise it is college ball all the way! Boomer Sooner!

  5. Hi David! I like how passionate you are about your career and hobbies. I love watching basketball. I feel like it’s one of the most interesting sports to watch. I’ll have to look into Shoe Dog after reading your thoughts on it because my boyfriend is also a huge Nike fan, and it would be a great gift. I might read it myself, as well! It’s always nice to read about the ambitions behind something so big. Looking forward to your stories.

  6. Hey David. I think you and I would get along really easily haha. I to really enjoy sports, I spend much of my time on campus at the Huff on the courts. I hope everything goes your way in the future and you come up with a great business idea that really takes off. I am currently watching BB right now and am probably spending more time watching it than I should, but hey when Netflix just keeps going to the next episode you cant just stop it am I right?

  7. Hi David!
That's awesome that you have a prototype that you're working on for your future startup! I've always wanted to build and create something of my own and have it go public, but I'm not that creative. I see that you're favorite sport to play is basketball which is funny because mine is also. I regularly go to the Huff every night and get in a couple pick up games. I'd be cool if we end of playing with one another one day! Breaking Bad is hands down one of the greatest shows of all time. I put it up there Game of Thrones and other great TV shows.

  8. Hi David, awesome choice of a major! While my major is engineering, I think entrepreneurship is really interesting. We actually started a club this year called Sooner Engineering Entrepreneurs Club. I also really love Breaking Bad. I think its so cool that he's a chemistry teacher and figures out how to use his knowledge in a creative and exciting way.

Good luck with senior year and your startup company!

  9. Hi David! So cool to hear how passionate you are about your major and the opportunities it offers — good luck with your startup!! Also, fantastic taste in movies/TV. I watched Breaking Bad for the first time this summer and have to say it's probably the most masterfully crafted show I've ever seen. And Interstellar is pretty mind-boggling itself. And I've heard a lot of good things about Phil Knight's book —  maybe I'll have to read it myself soon! For now, best of luck with your senior year and all of your business ambitions!

  10. Hello, David! First and foremost, congratulations on your upcoming graduation. It must be exciting to be so close to graduating and to already have a plan for a startup! I really respect your goals and passion and hope that you can fulfill all of your plans. Also, fun fact, the chemistry consultant for Breaking Bad was a professor here at OU! If you are interested here is a link to her description of working on the show, http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2014/05/what-was-it-consult-breaking-bad.

  11. David,
Hello! So several things stood out to me in your post. First, I have seen the book "Shoe Dog" in a friend's room before, and they recommended it as well! I might have to check it out.
Also, you said that you were a football fan, but moreso for college than for the NFL. I still have to ask, what are your thoughts on all of the national anthem protests going on? It has sparked quite a bit of controversy in the last several weeks.
Finally, I'm curious about Breaking Bad. It is so highly recommended by everyone, but I could never get into it because I thought it was too slow. I don't think I made it past the second episode!
    Anyways, nice to meet you!

  12. David, I thought it was a nice touch that you added your role model into your introductory post. (I should probably find one, too). Also, I just finished Breaking Bad a couple of weeks ago. The ending was kind of brutal. Anyway, I think that it is very respectable that you want a job that gets you money, but that you also want to help other people with it. You seem very goal-oriented. Good luck!

  13. Hi David! I like how you set up your introduction page. It is very organized. I am also a senior. I am ready to be done. I took a marketing class and I enjoyed it, minoring in it wouldn’t be too bad. I agree that your major opens many doors. Like you, I also enjoy playing video games and watching sports. Are you on a console or PC? I have not tried Rocket League yet, but I have heard good things. Also, Breaking Bad was a very good show. I like Dexter too. They came out around the same time. Thank you for sharing!

  14. Hi David! I am a marketing major who used to be double majoring in entrepreneurship! I dropped it because I was not going to graduate on time. I enjoyed the few entrepreneurship classes that I did take. They were very informative and gave me a lot of insight on entrepreneurial negotiations. Fun fact, my uncle looks like the main character from Breaking Bad!

  15. Hi David, congrats on being a senior! I also am not a fan of NFL football, even before the whole situation they started this season. I have a problem watching these men that are paid so much money to play a sport. I don’t know why and I understand it can be a difficult job I just can’t get over how much all of it cost. Good luck with starting your own business one day, you seem very driven!!

  16. Hi David! I always thought a major in entrepreneurship has so many opportunities. I feel like you have to have an open mind about your career to be this major, and I love that there’s much to explore. Good luck! I love basketball. I enjoy watching basketball more than football, but I enjoy watching football too. I’m looking forward to the rest of our home games this year!

  17. Hi David! It's great that you've found a major that's going to open so many doors for you after graduation. I still need to watch Breaking Bad — my sister and so many of my friends love it. I love Interstellar too! I love thinking about alternate dimensions and the universe. There are some cool YouTube videos out there that walk you through understanding the first 10 or 11 dimensions, which is super cool to me, and I love the way the fifth dimension is portrayed in Interstellar. (Sorry to nerd out.) Have a good rest of your semester!

  18. Hi David!
I really enjoy hearing about people's majors and why they chose them. I actually didn't know there was an entrepreneurship major at OU, and it sounds like a great fit for you! I'm impressed by people who are interested in creating startups, because my mind doesn't work that way at all. It takes so much innovation and courage, which is really great! Congratulations on being a senior, and good luck with the rest of your semester!

  19. Hello David! It is so cool that you got to take a class with President Boren! I remember there was a government class taught by him as well during my freshman year, but it was full by the time I got to enroll, so sadly I could not take it. I also love Interstellar and still believe that it is one of the greatest movie create by Christopher Nolan (I was so sad when he didn't get an Oscars for it!). I'm glad that you find a major that will allow you to do whatever to your desire. Good luck with the rest of the semester and nice to meet you!

  20. Hi David! I think it's so cool that you picked your major for the reason that you did. I remember getting to college and wanting to pick something for that same reason so that I wouldn't be tied down to one thing later in life so it sounds like we might have that in common. Also, we have the same favorite sport to watch for the same reason so that's cool too. I also prefer college football because its more about the team than the individual! I hope you have a lot of success in your future endeavors as an entrepreneur!

  21. Hey David!

We surprisingly have a lot in common! I love watching sports but mainly college football as well (especially now since the season has truly heated up) and think the NFL is somewhat the same each week. I also love playing rocket league even though I'm not that good at it. My favorite show is also breaking bad and I've watched the episodes too many times to count. I recommend you watch Westworld because it is the best show I've seen since Breaking bad.

  22. Hey David!
Wow, I think you might be the first person I've met this semester so far with a major in Price. I am a Pre-Dental Chemical Biosciences major with a minor in business, and I must say that I really love my business classes! I'm currently in Business Finance with Scott Linn, so if you have any tips that would be great! I have a test this week, actually. I've also tried starting Breaking Bad, but I'm so far behind that I wonder if it's even worth to start now. I wish you the best of luck with the three weeks we have left! Nice to meet you!
